Lead AI Engineer

Full timeMilan · On site with smart working

Senior developer who owns all of Maverick's development: agentic architectures, integrations and AI systems in production for enterprise clients. Reports directly to the founder.

Apply for this position

Compensation

  • Gross annual salary from €40,000 to €55,000
  • Variable bonus up to 15% of salary, based on performance
  • Equity plan vesting over 4 years

The role

We are looking for a senior developer to take ownership of engineering at Maverick. Most of your time goes into writing code, designing agentic architectures, integrating systems and getting solutions into production.

You are the technical lead on projects: you decide how they are built and you carry that responsibility from the first commit to everyday use by the client.

You work directly with clients, with no one in between, and you are as effective in front of a C-level executive as you are in front of a repository.

You report directly to the founder and help build Maverick's technical practice.

What you will do

Design and build AI systems

You design and implement LLM-based solutions: agents with tool use, workflow orchestration, RAG where it earns its place, skills, MCP integrations and automations on company systems. You write the code, define evals and guardrails, build monitoring and observability, and follow the solution from deployment through to running it in production.

Integrate AI with company systems

You connect solutions to ERP, CRM, document management, Microsoft and Google environments and legacy systems such as AS400. You design APIs and integrations, handling authentication, permissions, security and data processing.

Set the technical standards

You choose the stack, the tools and the reference architectures, and build components that carry over from one project to the next. You review the code of the collaborators working with us and keep the quality of what we ship high.

Understand processes and choose what to build

You step into processes you don't know, reconstruct them with the people who run them, and quickly tell what is technically interesting apart from what creates value. You identify and prioritise use cases, estimate effort and complexity, and see straight away what can be built, how, and what it costs.

Be the client's technical reference

You work with enterprise clients, including industrial groups, listed companies and private equity portfolio companies, dealing with general management, function heads and IT. Beyond building the solution, you are one of the client's main points of contact.

Take solutions through to adoption

After release you train the users, gather feedback, improve the solution and support the move from first use to settled adoption.

What we are looking for

Solid software engineering foundations

You have at least 5 years in software development and can work across backend, APIs, integrations, databases, cloud and CI/CD. You have built real systems, taken them to production and know what maintaining them means: reliability, rollout, technical debt, incidents and architectural trade-offs.

Hands-on experience with LLMs and agents

You have worked on LLM-based systems used by real users, with tool use, orchestration, RAG, evals, guardrails and memory. You know the problems that show up after the prototype stage and how to deal with them.

Technical ownership

You are used to making architectural decisions on your own and standing behind them. You have already been the technical reference on a project or a product.

An AI-first way of working

You use coding agents daily to develop and refactor code, generate tests and documentation, run reviews and speed up debugging and delivery. For us they are part of how software gets built.

Autonomy with clients

You have held direct responsibility in the relationship with clients or senior stakeholders. You can hold a conversation with an operations director or a CIO, explain an architectural choice in business terms, and say no when a request doesn't lead to the right solution.

Ability to communicate and write

You can produce analysis documents, technical specs, prompts and training material that are clear and usable. We work in Italian and English.

Startup mindset

We look for speed, ownership and pragmatism. You are comfortable in a changing context, where part of the job is building the processes, standards and tools themselves.

Education

A master's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field.

Nice to have

  • Experience with the Anthropic ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Code, MCP, Skills, Agent SDK)
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform
  • A background in technology consulting, a hyperscaler or a system integrator
  • Experience with mid-market companies, industrial groups and family-controlled businesses

How we work

The role is on site in Milan, with smart working and travel to clients across Italy. We believe working together in person matters, especially at this stage of growth, and we keep flexibility where the work allows it.

The AI adoption market in Italy is taking shape right now. Whoever joins today helps define how Maverick designs, builds and ships AI systems, and becomes one of the key people in the growth of the technical team.

Selection process

  1. 01Introductory conversation
  2. 02Technical working session on a real case
  3. 03A day working together on a live project
  4. 04Final conversation with the founder
