Four ways to use Claude, only one right for you
Anthropic offers four ways to access Claude. They look like variations of the same product. They are not.
Each has different implications for where your data ends up, who controls it, how much you pay, and what you can build on top of it. Choosing the wrong one means overpaying, having less control than you need, or hitting a wall when you need to scale.
The problem is that Anthropic's documentation describes the features of each plan, but doesn't tell you which one to pick. That depends on who you are, what you want to do, and what constraints you have.
This guide is a decision tree. Not a feature list. We start from the simplest question: what do you want to do with Claude?
The four options compared
Before we get into the decision tree, here is the full picture.
Claude.ai (consumer) is the free or Pro version (20 dollars per month). Designed for personal use. Data may be used for model training unless you opt out. No Data Processing Agreement. Not suitable for sensitive business data. Setup time: five minutes.
Claude API is the pay-per-use model for building custom solutions. DPA available, no training on your data. Requires technical expertise for integration. Costs depend on volume and the model chosen. Setup time: days to weeks, depending on complexity.
Claude Team and Enterprise are plans for giving Claude to employees with centralized governance. Team costs 30 dollars per user per month, with higher limits than Pro. Enterprise has custom pricing and includes SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and admin console. DPA included in both. Setup time: hours for Team, weeks for Enterprise. For a detailed comparison between plans, we have a dedicated article.
Cowork 3P (Research Preview) is inference on your own cloud. Claude runs on Google Vertex AI or Amazon Bedrock. Data never passes through Anthropic. For companies with strict data residency requirements or in highly regulated industries. Setup time: weeks.
The decision tree: start from your need
You just want to explore Claude, understand what it does and whether it can help your company? Start with claude.ai Pro. Twenty dollars a month, instant access, no technical setup. Do not use it with sensitive business data, but for understanding the model's capabilities it is more than enough.
You want to build custom solutions? A document copilot, an automated analysis system, an agent that interacts with your data? Go with the API. You pay only for what you consume, you have full control over the architecture, and you can integrate Claude with any system through the Model Context Protocol. You need a technical team or a partner like Maverick AI for implementation. To understand how to structure the project, read our guide on how to integrate Claude in your company.
You want to give Claude to your employees with centralized governance? Under 150 users and without SSO requirements, Claude Team is sufficient. Above 150 users, or if you need SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and granular policies, you need Enterprise. In both cases you get the DPA and non-training guarantee.
Your data cannot leave your cloud perimeter? You are in a regulated industry with data residency requirements? The only option is Cowork 3P, which runs Claude directly on Vertex AI or Bedrock. No data passes through Anthropic. It is still in Research Preview, but for banks, insurance, healthcare, and defense it is often the only viable path.

Practical comparison: cost, control, governance
Here is how the four options compare on the factors that actually matter.
Cost. Claude.ai Pro: 20 dollars per month, fixed. API: variable, from a few dollars to thousands per month depending on volume. Team: 30 dollars per user per month. Enterprise: custom pricing, typically from 50 dollars per user per month. Cowork 3P: cloud infrastructure cost plus Claude model cost.
Data control. Claude.ai: data may be used for training (can be opted out). API: no training, DPA available. Team: no training, DPA included. Enterprise: no training, DPA included, configurable policies. Cowork 3P: data stays in your cloud, no data sent to Anthropic. Governance. Claude.ai: none. API: control via code. Team: basic admin console. Enterprise: SSO, SCIM, audit logs, granular policies. Cowork 3P: your cloud provider's governance.
Technical requirements. Claude.ai: none. API: development team. Team: none. Enterprise: IT for SSO and SCIM setup. Cowork 3P: cloud infrastructure and DevOps expertise.
Best for. Claude.ai: individual professionals, exploration. API: companies building AI products. Team: SMBs wanting Claude for the team. Enterprise: mid-size and large companies with governance requirements. Cowork 3P: banks, healthcare, defense, companies with data residency constraints.
The most common mistakes when choosing
The first mistake is going straight to Enterprise when the API would suffice. This happens when a company wants to build a specific solution, not give Claude to all employees. Enterprise is a user access plan, not a development platform. If your goal is a document copilot for three people, the API costs less and gives you more control.
The second mistake is using claude.ai with business data. It happens more often than you would think. A manager copies a confidential contract into the free Claude.ai chat, not knowing that data could end up in the training set. The risk is real and must be managed with internal policies before even choosing a plan.
The third mistake is underestimating Cowork 3P. Many companies in regulated industries give up on Claude because they assume data must go to Anthropic. It does not. With Cowork on Vertex or Bedrock, inference happens in your cloud and Anthropic sees nothing.
The fourth mistake is choosing Team when you need Enterprise. The difference is not just the price. If you need SSO to integrate Claude with your identity provider, or audit logs for compliance, Team is not enough. And migrating from Team to Enterprise later means reconfiguring everything.
How to decide: the path with Maverick AI
Choosing the right deployment is not just a technical decision. It depends on your AI strategy, regulatory constraints, budget, and internal capabilities.
Maverick AI guides companies through this process. We start with an assessment that maps priority use cases, compliance constraints, and existing infrastructure. From there we identify the right deployment and implement it.
There is no universal answer. A manufacturing company with 50 employees has different needs than a bank with 5,000 users. A private equity fund analyzing confidential documents has different constraints than a marketing agency generating content.
What matters is starting from the right question: not which plan costs less, but which configuration generates the most value in your specific context.
